Employment, Insurance & Superannuation for people with MS – Free Helpline

Maurice Blackburn Lawyers have recently launched a free Helpline 1800 196 050 providing advice about Employment, Superannuation and Insurance for people with a disability.

There are many issues faced by people with a disability:
• When and how do I stop work?
• How do I keep my job if I can’t do what I used to?
• What do I do if I can’t work anymore?
• How am I going to pay the bills?

It’s very important for people with a disability to be aware of their rights at work. Where work is no longer possible, superannuation or insurance benefits can remove some of the financial burden.

Streamlined payment system to replace Continence Aids Assistance Scheme (CAAS)

Hi All, Last year after many years of letter writing to various Ministers of Health we were happy to be involved in the fact that the Continence Aids Scheme (CAAS) which had been administered by a sole provider,  with costs for these hygiene aids considerably higher than those when purchased at a chemist or elsewhere, was to be changed.

This new streamlined payment system will replace the current Continence Aids Assistance Scheme (CAAS) which is delivered through a Government agreement with the sole supplier.

The new Continence Aids Payment Scheme will simplify the system and allow clients to shop around to get the best value for money and to purchase the most appropriate products for their individual needs.  The Continence Aids Payment Scheme will be delivered by Medicare Australia from 1 July 2010 and will be paid directly into a client’s nominated bank account

The Australian Government Department of Health and Ageing is hosting a series of information sessions around Australia on the introduction of the new Continence Aids Payment Scheme (CAPS).  CAPS will replace the Continence Aids Assistance Scheme (CAAS) from lst July 2010.

Information sessions are open to consumers and their carers, medical and allied health professionals, service providers and produce suppliers.

To find out where information sessions are being held, and to register your interest in attending a session located near you, you should visit the Department’s website www.bladderbowel.gov.au/furtherinfo/caps/ or call the toll-free phone number 1800 118 445 during business hours (Monday to Friday from 9.am to 5.pm).

Registrations close 5.pm on Friday 19th March 2010.

A confirmation letter will be provided to registered participants.

This is wonderful news for those in our community who have been paying exorbitant prices for their continence aids for many years.    The year since this new scheme was announced has come around at last – and the 1st July will be here in no time. Another win for our community of people who use these aids.

With best regards
Sheila King
